Two Rivers Health and Wellness Foundation

By Jennifer LoConte

Two Rivers Health and Wellness Foundation has been improving lives in the Lehigh Valley community since it was founded in 2001. Originally formed after the sale of Easton Hospital, Two Rivers mission is to enhance the health and wellbeing of residents of Northampton County and surrounding areas. To date, this successful non-profit foundation has given $3.2 million in grants to approximately 60 non-profit agencies within Northampton County.

Paul Brunswick, President and Executive Director, has been with Two Rivers for the last twelve years. In fact, most of the eleven board members have been with the organization since day one, which is uncommon for today. Brunswick says, “We are extremely proud to be able to give back to the community in so many ways and improve the lives of our residents.”

Two Rivers strategic plan focuses on four priorities that continue to need funding in the communities it serves:  (1) programs for the elderly; (2) programs to benefit maternal, infant and child care; (3) behavioral health; and (4) oral health. Some of the organizations that received grants for the elderly include Meals on Wheels, Easton Area Community Center and the American Red Cross of the Greater Lehigh Valley. The Red Cross received funding for their Lifeline program, a popular and lifesaving component for the area’s aging population. Turning Point of the Lehigh Valley, Big Brothers/Big Sisters and Children’s Home of Easton are just a few of the organizations that received funding for maternal and child care. Big Brothers/Big Sisters held an educational mentoring initiative and Children’s Home benefitted from a Siblings Growing Together program. Via of the Lehigh Valley and New Directions Treatment Services received funding for behavioral health. Via ran a Retirement Services initiative which helped transition retirees into their new lifestyle with several group activities.

The Northampton Dental Initiative was formed in response to an overwhelming need for affordable dental care in the Lehigh Valley. This initiative provides free dental care to residents of Northampton County that meet federal financial criteria. Services include: oral exams, fluoride treatments, sealants, x-rays, fillings, routine restorative treatment and oral hygiene instruction. Since 2007, approximately 3,000 residents from ages 2 to 92 have received dental treatments, some for the first time. Patients can receive treatment at the Two Rivers dental clinic or through six participating dental providers. This year, $120,000 will be distributed towards this much-needed dental program.  Brunswick adds, “Patients are extremely grateful for the dental program that we offer. Each year, new patients arrive who are just learning about us for the first time.” To speak directly with a dental administrator, call 1-866-903-9104.

In addition to the dental program, the foundation also participates in a federal government grant called the Ryan White Care Act, an early intervention treatment program for people living with HIV/AIDS. Services are administered through St. Luke’s University Health Network Clinic as well as the Easton Hospital Clinic and are provided regardless of income or health insurance status. Brunswick says, “To date, approximately 270 people living with HIV/AIDS have received treatment and this year, we will distribute $840,000 towards the program.”

There are several ways for the public to lend a helping hand. Two Rivers Health and Wellness Foundation’s annual fundraiser, Crystal Cabaret, will take place on Friday, April 26, 2013 at Riverview Country Club in Easton. Tickets are $75/person and will be available for purchase by contacting the foundation as well as requesting to be added to their mailing list. Additionally, monetary gifts from individuals and/or business organizations are placed in the general fund to support the Foundation’s mission. Memorials or honorariums are also a great way to pay tribute to a loved one. Check out the Tree of Life plaque located in Easton Hospital’s upper lobby – an engraved leaf can be permanently added for a donation of $500.00.
