The public is invited to celebrate Northampton County History Day on Sunday, March 11 at the Sigal Museum in Easton.
The Northampton County History Day event is sponsored by Passport to History, an alliance of the county’s historical societies and organizations. Commemorating Northampton County’s March 11 incorporation in 1752, the day’s program launches the Passport program.
Passport to History 2012 introduces visitors to more than twenty historical sites throughout Northampton County.
The free passport provides times of staffing, directions and overview of historical sites, and contact information so that visitors can peruse the rich historical offerings of Northampton County. Passports will be stamped at each participating site. David Vilcek, Chair of the program, says, “It’s a wonderfully fun way for families to learn the history of their own geographical region. The sites testify to our rich historical heritage, right here in Northampton County.” At the conclusion of the year-long program, awards will be issued to well-traveled visitors at next year’s Northampton County History Day in March, 2013.
The free, open-to-the-public event will be held at the Sigal Museum, 342 Northampton Street, Easton, PA, from 2:00 to 4:00 pm.
Frank Whelan, historian and author, will give a talk on Northampton County history at 2:30 pm. Throughout the afternoon, reenactors of the 153rd (Northampton County’s own volunteer regiment during the Civil War) will join member organizations in welcoming visitors back in time. Refreshments will be served in celebration of the County’s birthday.

Cedar Crest College will host a free public performance of an original play that focuses on the dangers of cyberbulling.
About Face will premiere on Saturday, Feb. 11, at 10 a.m. in the 1867 Room, Tompkins College Center, and then be performed for students at several area middle schools as part of the About Face Bully Tour.
(See below for complete list of schools).
Cyberbullying has become a major issue with the increasing popularity of social media sites, as well as some highly publicized incidents in which victims have suffered severe emotional and physical consequences.
Written by Cedar Crest Art Professor Roxanne Amico of Allentown and starring Cedar Crest students, About Face features several middle school girls who are involved in a cyberbullying incident. Amico wrote the play after finding precious few scripts that addressed the topic. While About Face is fictitious, aspects mirror current and recent events that have made national headlines.
For information on the About Face performance at Cedar Crest College call 610-606-4608.

The Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit, Gothic to Goth: Embracing the Dark Side. This show will run through April 29, 2012 in the Goodman Gallery.
Gothic to Goth offers an overview of the nineteenth-century cult of mourning in American art and fashion and indicates how that trend translated into contemporary Goth fashion, a genre now embraced by mainstream couture as well as by the rock subculture of the twentieth century. Included in the exhibition are representative examples of mourning art such as needle pictures, paintings, and post-mortem daguerreotype portraits; mourning jewelry and other accessories; two late Victorian mourning outfits; and examples of contemporary Goth fashion inspired by the mourning excesses of the earlier century. Objects from the museum’s own collections are supplemented by loans from the Everhart Museum, Burns Archive, Lacawanna Historical Society, Sigal Museum, Drexel Historic Costume Collection, the designer Kambriel, Heavy Red Couture Noir and custom jewelry designer and manufacturer Atelier Gothique.

Cedar Crest College presents Search the Surface, an exhibition featuring the works of artists Pat Badt, Leslie Fletcher, Ken Kewley and Chris Neyen from Jan. 25 through Feb. 26 in the Lachaise Gallery of the Miller Family Building.
The exhibition is free and open to the public and an artist reception is scheduled for Friday,
January 27, from 6-8 p.m.
“What our students and the general public will see here are four different people who use line, color, shape, texture and space to convey meaning to varying degrees,” said Gallery Coordinator Brian Wiggins. “In other words, without representation or figurative elements allowing for recognition the viewer is being asked to operate and connect on a different level than one they are accustomed to.”

The Allentown Art Museum of the Lehigh Valley is partnering with Discover Lehigh Valley and various local arts organizations and businesses to bring you Rock Through The Valley, a unique experience of Rock n’ Roll related events in the community.
Rock Through the Valley is a cooperative effort to go hand-in-hand with the Art Museum’s “Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present” exhibit. “We wanted to unify the arts community and give residents and visitors a schedule of related events throughout the Valley,” said Elsbeth Haymon, Director of Marketing and Development for the Allentown Art Museum. “The Who Shot Rock & Roll” exhibit is a blockbuster installation that is coming to us from Brooklyn, New York, and because the subject of rock n’ roll is so widespread, we wanted to take the opportunity to call attention to other organizations in the arts community that have the same theme going on at their location.”
Rock Through the Valley events run from February 2012 through May 2012. You can find information about all the rock related events and promotions going on throughout the year by visiting www.rockthroughthevalley.com.

After a successful preliminary season including Hamlet: A Rock Experience, Allentown Public Theatre (APT) turns to comedy for its first full season of performances, running January – December 2012. Various subscription options are now available for purchase at www.allentownpublictheatre.com. Subscribers will save up to 20% compared to individual ticket prices.
APT Main-Stage Season Shows, all directed by APT Artistic Director Joshua Neth, include:
*The Teddy Bear Awards: Part I, January 5-7 and Part II, January 12-14 in the Red Door Cafe in Seegers Union at Muhlenberg College. The Teddy Bear Awards isa new musical play by Peter Schmidt (with cameo appearance by B’way and Off-B’way legend Jeff Weiss). It follows Valley students, parents, directors, school board members and international conspirators in their mad pursuit of the Teddy Award for “Awesomest Musical Ever This Year.” Local business leaders Jocko’s Doggies and SmokeStaxx Casino are proud to sponsor this song-and-dance, sturm-und-drang, multimedia extravaganza.
*The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged): By Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, The Complete Works is a three-actor romp through the Bard’s plays, full of parody and farce. Among its many wacky wonders are Othellodone as a rap song, Titus Andronicus played as a cooking show and audience participation as Ophelia’s subconscious in Hamlet. So hilarious, it ran for nine record- breaking years at The Criterion Theatre in London.
*The Dead Guy: July 19 – August 4 in the Long Haul Room at America On Wheels. What would you do for a million bucks and a week of television stardom? In Eric Coble’s darkly humorous satire on reality TV, Eldon Phelps, down on his luck, gives everything for fortune and fame on a show called “The Dead Guy,” where ultimately viewers will vote on the means of his demise.
*Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!):
December 6 – 22 at Allentown Brew Works’ fifth floor ballroom on Thursdays, in the Disco at The Stonewall on Fridays and at a location yet to be determined on Saturdays.
APT wraps it up with Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!) by Michael Carleton, James FitzGerald and John K. Alvarez. Instead of doing Dickens yet again, a trio of actors powers through every Yule tale ever told – plus Christmas traditions from around the world, and all the carols too. A merry, witty dash through the holiday season, in the relaxed atmosphere of various ‘watering holes’ in the Valley.
Passes for Allentown Public Theatre’s 2012 season are available in 3-show, 4-show or “Flex” blocks at regular adult and discounted senior/student prices. Subscriptions are the best way to ensure great seats at the lowest price. Single tickets for APT’s 2012 season will go on sale Thursday, December 1. 4-Show Pass can be purchased for all four Main-Stage Productions for $85, and $80 for seniors/students. A 3-Show Pass for three of Allentown Public Theatre’s Main-Stage Productions is $65; $60 for seniors/students. 4-Show and 3-Show “Flex” Passes will also be available, providing tickets to use in any combination at any of the Main-Stage Productions.

As part of a national effort to raise substantial funds for veterans’ aid organizations and bring attention to the special needs of returning heroes, Northhampton Coin & Jewelry is introducing “From Soldier To Soldier,” an awareness and fundraising campaign in support of wounded veterans and their families. Sales of a designer version of the survival and friendship bracelets worn by many U.S. and allied soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan will be sold through Northampton Coin & Jewelry. For every bracelet sold through Northampton Coin & Jewelry, $25 will be donated to Homes For Our Troops, and, specifically, the home being built for injured veteran SPC Robert Kislow of Danielsville, Pennsylvania, who was severely injured during an ambush in Afghanistan.
The designer version of the bracelets made in the field, referred to as “survival bracelets” have a sterling silver clasp shaped like a uniform button and is very tightly braided. Sterling silver and gold plated sterling silver heart clasps with and without a small diamond are also available. (The button clasp symbolizes the uniform. The clasped bracelet symbolizes the bond among the soldiers that can never be broken. To some, each know in the bracelet symbolizes a fallen hero).
