When 25-year-old Mark Holencik decided to step out on his own, he had no idea his simple one-man operation would ultimately grow into one of the most trusted and successful exterior construction companies in the Lehigh Valley.

Beginning in 1980 under the name “Mark L. Holencik General Contractor” he started his enterprise with a few hand tools, a ladder, a pickup truck, and – most importantly – eight years of experience. “My father grew up in Northampton and worked with several other Lehigh Valley contractors prior to starting his own company,” explained Jesse Holencik, General Manager. “But since it was primarily seasonal work, he decided it would be better to establish his own business so he could do more.”

Securing jobs primarily through word-of-mouth advertising, and by working as a sub-contractor on larger projects, Mark quickly built a reputation for quality work and fair prices. By the mid 1990s, he had a small team of contractors working with him out of his Coplay office.

When Mark’s youngest son, Adam, graduated high school in the spring of 1996, he decided to join his father. As they worked side by side together, the pair soon realized roofing was their forte. So in 1997, they changed names to “Mark Holencik Roofing” and began to aggressively market their talents. Adam, in particular, continued to hone his skills by rising to the level of “journeyman roofer”. “There are different categories for roofers and for most craftsmen,” said Jesse. “Being a journeyman essentially means that he has the skills to do the entire job; he knows everything that has to be done.”

As demand for the Holenciks’ services continued to grow, it became apparent that additional help was needed – particularly in terms of office management and client outreach. To fill these needs, Mark’s eldest son, Jesse, came onboard in 2000 after graduating from East Stroudsburg University. Working in an administrative and sales role, Jesse helped manage the company’s workflow and develop new areas of opportunity. “For years my father would get calls during the day while he was out doing work,” explained Jesse. “He’d return them in the evening, but it became difficult to manage after awhile. So my initial job was to meet with clients, do the estimates, and then schedule the work. This allowed my dad to stay up on the roof, which is where he really liked being.”

In 2002, the company made the first of what would become several expansions. For years, they had hired sub-contractors for gutter repair and installation. However concerns over the quality of the work, and whether or not the sub-contractors carried the proper insurances, eventually spurred Mark to invest in his own seamless gutter machine. Hiring a new crew to take over this task, he also stressed proper training to ensure all of his employees were prepared to offer superior service.

Once the gutter business was firmly established, the company expanded again, this time by starting Holencik Insulation in 2009. Teaming up with Owens Corning, a global Fortune 500 company that produces top-quality insulation products, Holencik began offering blown-in insulation. “Compared to roofing, gutters, and siding this is a rather small part of what we do,” said Jesse. “But it does allow us to offer an additional service to our clients, particularly if we are doing a roof for them and determine they could use some extra insulation while we are working.”

Today, Holencik Exteriors continues to be family owned and operated. At age 61, Mark is still heavily involved in the business and spends the majority of his time out on jobsites. Jesse serves as the General Manager and is a full partner with his father, while Adam works as the Roofing Supervisor. Jesse’s wife, Jolynn, works as the company’s Office Manager. In addition to family members, the company also employs another thirteen people.

Dedicated to maintaining the highest level of quality workmanship, Holencik is master certified with GAF, which is North America’s largest manufacturer of commercial and residential roofing materials. Since only 3% of all roofers achieve this certification, it puts them in an elite category of qualified craftsmen. “We are what is known as a ‘Master Elite Contractor’ with GAF,” explained Jesse. “That is the highest level of certification that they have in their brand and it is only achieved through advanced training. Not only does it mean that our relationship with the brand is very strong, but it also allows us to offer enhanced warranties.”

In fact, Holencik’s guarantees are another area that sets them apart from the competition. Clients are encouraged to join the “Overhead Care Club” which includes a free yearly inspection of the roof and attic, cleaning of any skylights, 10% off all repairs, and guaranteed service within 24 hours. Their standard repair guarantee also states that if a Holencik worker smokes or swears on a client’s property, or if a worker fails to wear the proper “floor saver” protection while indoors, the repair is free. If a client ever experiences a problem with their shingles, Holencik also promises to replace the roof at no cost. “We say 100% satisfaction guaranteed and we really mean it,” said Jesse. “We will go above and beyond to do whatever it takes to make the client happy.”

In addition to standard roofing, gutter installation and repair, and insulation services, Holencik Exteriors also offers slate roofing repair, siding and window installation. For more information about their services, or to speak with someone in the company, please visit holencik.com.
